Abstract

ABSTRACT: Tourism sustainability began to gain increasing attention in the late twentieth century, giving rise to a field of study focused on the development of more sustainable tourism models. Since then, international organizations and researchers have worked to develop tools for assessing the sustainability of tourism destinations and enabling comparisons across space and over time. Although several studies and indicator frameworks have become international references, limitations regarding their application and assessment remain. One example is the exclusion of certain Latin American countries from the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index, including Cuba. In this context, the aim of this research is to identify the main limitations and gaps that hinder the inclusion of Cuba as a tourism destination in this index. Expert judgment and descriptive statistical techniques were used for this purpose. The results provide an initial assessment of Cuba's sustainability subindex, estimate its position within the Americas, and identify insufficient data availability as the main constraint preventing its inclusion in the Travel & Tourism Development Index. Keywords: Cuba; tourism destinations; indicators; sustainability; Travel & Tourism Development Index; assessment.
