Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article examines population aging and the role of Long-Term Care Institutions for Older Adults (ILPIs) in Brazil, emphasizing the structural, cultural, and historical factors that shape old age and demand inclusive public policies. ILPIs are discussed as spaces of care and socialization, with a focus on the obstacles to providing leisure activities and on their importance as a right linked to dignity, autonomy, and quality of life. From a socio-anthropological perspective, demographic data, legal frameworks, and specialized literature are articulated to problematize reductionist views of institutional care and of the symbolism of aging. It is argued that leisure, when integrated into the therapeutic project and the institutional daily routine, functions as a strategic axis of well-being and inclusion, while its absence reinforces disciplining routines and the invisibilization of subjectivities that remain present within ILPIs. Keywords: care and aging; institutions and old age(s); sociabilities; leisure and aging.
