EL AVISTAMIENTO DE BALLENAS COMO ACTIVIDAD TURÍSTICA EN LA COSTA DE OAXACA, MÉXICO. IMPACTOS SOCIOECONÓMICOS Y SOCIOAMBIENTALES
WHALE WATCHING AS A TOURIST ACTIVITY ON THE OAXACA COAST, MEXICO. SOCIOECONOMIC AND SOCIOENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
Abstract
RESUMEN: El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar los impactos socioeconómicos y socioambientales del avistamiento de ballenas como actividad turística en la Costa de Oaxaca. Se empleó un método cualitativo mediante la realización de once entrevistas a actores locales directamente involucrados. Los resultados evidencian beneficios como la diversificación de la oferta turística, la generación de empleo y la sensibilización ambiental. Sin embargo, también se identificaron efectos negativos, como el acoso a los cetáceos, colisiones y contaminación acústica, asociados a la falta de conocimiento sobre buenas prácticas. Se concluye que esta actividad presenta un alto potencial educativo, económico y ambiental, pero requiere una regulación efectiva y una gobernanza participativa para garantizar su sostenibilidad. RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os impactos socioeconômicos e socioambientais da observação de baleias como atividade turística na costa de Oaxaca. Utilizou-se um método qualitativo, realizando onze entrevistas com atores locais diretamente envolvidos. Os resultados demonstram benefícios como a diversificação da oferta turística, a geração de empregos e a conscientização ambiental. No entanto, também foram identificados efeitos negativos, como o assédio a baleias, colisões e poluição sonora, associados à falta de conhecimento sobre as melhores práticas. Conclui-se que esta atividade tem um potencial educacional, econômico e ambiental significativo, mas requer regulamentação eficaz e governança participativa para garantir sua sustentabilidade. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze the socioeconomic and socio-environmental impacts of whale watching as a tourist activity on the coast of Oaxaca. A qualitative approach was employed through eleven interviews with local stakeholders directly involved in the activity. The results reveal benefits such as the diversification of tourism offerings, job creation, and increased environmental awareness. However, negative effects were also identified, including harassment of whales, collisions, and noise pollution, largely due to a lack of knowledge about best observation practices. The study concludes that whale watching holds significant educational, economic, and environmental potential but requires effective regulation and participatory governance to ensure its sustainability.
